To climb steep ice, you'll use a lot of what you learned in rock and snow climbing and add in the special tools and techniques for ice. As an ice climber, you will especially share the joys of snow climbing, along with its perils: avalanches, hazardous couloirs, and unstable cornices, ice blocks, and icefalls. (Chapter 12 provides a full catalog of snow-climbing dangers and how to avoid them.) You can find climbing opportunities year-around, from the winter challenge of waterfall ice on short dark days in cold weather to the summer experience of alpine ice on days that are long and warm.
