Before a major climb, plan retreat lines in case of bad weather, accident, or other emergency. Locate other routes that are easy to reach to speed the ascent or that have fixed retreat lines.
If no retreat route exists, consider carrying a bolt kit for emergencies, allowing you to place rappel anchors. Also, as you climb each pitch, consider how you would descend it. On major walls rescues may be slow and difficult, if possible at all. It may be up to you to get back down in an emergency.
