Each of the chapters from the fourth edition has been revised, rewritten, and, where necessary, expanded. These revisions reflect the rapid changes occurring in various areas of mountaineering and are due to increased popularity, the development of new techniques, and the introduction of new and improved equipment. Chapters considerably enhanced by these changes include: First Steps, Leading and Placing Protection, Rock Climbing Technique, Aid Climbing and Pitoncraft, and Belaying. This edition presents a completely new chapter on Winter and Expedition Climbing.

A professional writer rewrote the material from all contributors, bringing the various parts and chapters together to form a comprehensive text. Additional headings clarify the topics and direct the reader to pertinent information. Completely new illustrations of techniques and equipment clearly and accurately illustrate the text. Line figure drawings were created from photographs of climbers demonstrating the precise technique.
