A climber who is just learning to belay should select and stick to one method, perfecting it to the point that setup is largely automatic. At that stage, some climbers become very opinionated about the choice they've made. But the most experienced climbers often learn other methods and use them whenever they offer an advantage.
As you learn belaying, you will discover your own favorite tools and techniques. However you belay, the methods all boil down to a means of stopping a fall by applying friction to the rope and by resisting the forward pull of the fall.
