Tattoo You

A FEW MONTHS AGO, we reached out to the Climbing community for images of tattoos and their related histories and back stories. What we got in return was funny, inspirational, silly, thoughtful, and even scary. Here, we present to you a nice cross section of your fellow climbers' ink.

Iceaxe Tattoos

This is the most expensive piece on my rack. It's now colored, but in retrospect, I think

1 like it better in black and white. I do keep it out of sight at most major climbing areas to avoid the dreaded question, "Is that a No.

2 on your arm?" I do believe climbing is all about the self, and my expression is mine and mine alone.

Trad Climbing Explanation

The artist had no idea what it was, no matter how detailed of an explanation I gave him. I was just getting into trad climbing, and I loved it. I had put sport and bouldering on the back burner while I recovered from a ligament injury and ruptured muscle in my right wrist. I had wanted a tattoo for a while and figured this would keep me psyched while I was off the rock.

Tattoo Ice Axe

Here's a picture of the tattoo I got this year of a robotic skeleton climbing up my arm with ice axes and crampons penetrating my skin. The robotic skeleton represents my being a double, below-the-knee amputee and ice climber.

Climb Tattoo

The color tattoo is of [our son] Steve Small climbing East Face (5.10) on Hitchcock Pinnacle at Mt. Lemmon, Tucson, Arizona. It is on his right arm and was done from a photograph of him doing the climb. Steve just wanted a "cool tat." He started climbing at the age of 5, and he is now 31.

Reader Tip of the Month

To keep your mitts from greasing off crimps in the warm spring temps, dab a bit of liquid chalk before chalking up to pre-dry your hands so you don't have to reach for your bag after every hold. You can also make liquid chalk the dirtbag way by using a recycled squeeze bottle, rubbing alcohol, and chalk. Travis Thaw; via climbing.com

Travis' helpful hint scores him a PETZL TIKKA PLUS 2 (petzl.com) that manages 140 hours of burn time and five lighting modes with two LEDs, one high-output LED and one red LED.

"IT'S THE PROCESS AND IMAGINING POSSIBILITIES WHERE NONE YET EXIST...

It's not taking anything for granted. For me, there is no more engaging an experience than to discover a new line in the mountains, to envision it, then set about the task of realizing it. The journey to create something out of what, at first, seem like disparate pieces of a natural puzzle gives me understanding of the outside world and the world within myself. The partnerships and the shared memories are my souvenirs." Read about Shingo's latest climbing adventures at outdoorresearch.com/rockclimbing
