Getting The Feel Of It

SIX YEARS AGO, I was dropping off photographs for a community fundraiser at a gallery in Colorado Springs. Turning to leave, I was shocked to see Thomas Blackshear, a fellow Springs-area resident, a world-renowned fine-art painter, and a hero of mine. Thomas' work includes numerous U.S. Postage Stamp series, exhibitions at the Smithsonian and American Museum of American History, and the annual Ebony Collection, a series of African American sculptures that for years was the number-one collected sculpture series in the U.S. I turned back to finish up with my art and to muster up enough courage to walk up and introduce myself, only to turn around and find myself face-to-face with Blackshear. I left with a new mindset, realizing that so many of my memories are formed around photographs - my own and those of others - that I subconsciously connected with for emotional reasons rather than aesthetics. However, they only supplement, and do not take the place of, on-the-ground reconnaissance conducted from available vantage points.

You can also add your images to groups, which lets more people see your work.,,,,,, PRO TOOLS Your eye and brain see a scene in a very selective, focused way, but a camera does not. You need to tell your camera what to do, what to focus on. Instead of just snapping a shot, hoping to take in what your eye sees, take a moment to identify what you're really shooting. Is it the dramatic valley and peaks behind the climber Or is it the climb itself you're trying to capture Is it a certain wild move, or is it the whole scene including belayer and belay dogs sprawled out in the dirt below Once you decide what you're going for, you'll begin to recognize it when you see it in your...

Stone Into Wood

Julie Ellison Climber

NOTHING COMMEMORATES an unforgettable climbing trip like a hard drive full of digital photos, but let's be real how many of us actually take the time to print the photos and display them And even if we did, would the procession of buttshots and overexposed landscapes really deserve wall space Probably not. Civilian 1 12,000 maps can be used if available. Aerial, oblique angle, photographs give details not always shown on maps (crags and overhangs). Sketch maps supplement other sources of information but should not be relied on for accuracy since they are seldom drawn to scale. Along with sketch maps, verbal descriptions, documented information gathered from units previously in the area, or published sources such as alpine journals or climbing guides may help. Forest service and logging and mining company maps provide additional information, often showing the most recent changes to logging trails and mining access roads. Standard military topographic maps are generally accurate graphic depictions of the operational area.
